We have all seen areas of clear-felled timber and while it never looks the best, forestry does form a key part of Scotland's sustainable future and we have space for so much more.
One such area at Balmuick Farm, however is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Following a recent felling operation, the clear up has begun before we start planting out native broadleaf trees this coming season.

The new woodland will incorporate wetland pond areas, pedestrian paths, scenic viewpoints and will soon form a valuable part of the sustainable future of the farm and the surrounding area.
The woodland will be located on what was originally an area that once contained a mill pond with an old lade running down through the steading and returning to the burn further downstream.
This formed part of the inspiration for the recreation of a wetland area within the woodland. As you can see from the photos we have now reinstated our version of the old millpond which also spawned the name for the new woodland of "Auld Mill Wood".
Trees planted will include oak, birch, rowan, alder, willow, hazel and holly - amongst others. The aim is to create an area that is a mecca for woodland and wetland wildlife.
This special project has been sponsored by a variety of different businesses who share our vision for a sustainable future.
Thanks as always to our planting partners:
